Caring for African American Hair - Summer Fall 2009 Hair Tips
African American hair is unique and needs special care to look its best. Unfortunately, many people do not know how to properly care for their African American hair. The biggest issue with this type of very curly hair is dryness. This means that moisturizing the hair is very important. However, it is difficult to moisturize the hair properly so that each hair actually absorbs the moisture without looking greasy.
Caring for African American Hair
Taking a natural turn with caring for African American hair is usually best. Some natural moisturizers that work wonderfully are avocados, yogurt, and olive oil. You can use avocados best by simple mashing them up and making a thick mask out of them for your hair. Let this soak for 30 minutes before rinsing with warm water. Avoid using very hot water as this dries the hair out further. Plain yogurt or yogurt with honey can be used much the same way, just make sure you rinse thoroughly. Olive oil is a bit trickier to use. Take a small amount (this will depend on the length of your hair) and carefully massage the oil into the scalp and then take your oil covered fingers and gently rub the oil into the rest of your hair. Put a plastic shower cap on and then wrap your head in a towel. Leave the oil to soak for 30 to 45 minutes and then thoroughly rinse your hair. It is best to do the olive oil treatment before you wash your hair. Your hair will still get the benefit of the moisture and you will be assured of getting all of the oil out of your hair.
